Washing Machine Not Spinning? Common Causes and What to Do Next

A washer not spinning may have an unsuitable spin setting, an unbalanced load, excess suds, a drainage restriction or a door-lock problem. First, check whether water remains in the drum or only the clothes are wet. That distinction helps you choose the next safe check instead of assuming the motor has failed.

Stop using the washer if it moves violently or actively leaks. Use Stop/Pause only if you can reach the controls safely. Do not hold a moving machine in place. First, identify what “not spinning” means

Observe the display and any water visible through the door. For a top-loader, look inside only after the machine stops and the lid releases normally.

These are starting points, not diagnoses. Whirlpool’s overview identifies settings, load, drainage and interrupted power as possible contributors.

Try this short settings and load check

Proceed only if there is no leakage, violent movement or electrical concern.

1. Record the current display. Photograph the selected cycle, spin setting, remaining time and any error text before cancelling or changing the programme.
2. Check the spin selection. Low Spin and No Spin can leave laundry wetter. Select a cycle and spin speed suitable for the garments, following their care labels and the washer manual.
3. Pause before adjusting the load. Wait for the drum to stop completely and the door or lid to unlock normally. If it remains locked, stop here.
4. Correct an obvious loading problem. Loosen tangled items and reduce an overloaded drum. Follow the manual’s loading guidance for a single heavy item, bedding or a very small load.
5. Try the appropriate recovery cycle once. If the manual permits, select Drain & Spin or Spin Only. Stay nearby. Stop if the washer leaks, moves violently or repeats the fault.

Why an unbalanced or unsuitable load can prevent spinning

A washer may slow down or abandon its fast spin when laundry remains unevenly distributed. It may make several attempts to redistribute the load, extending the cycle. Bosch explains this imbalance response.

Too little laundry can be difficult to balance, just as an overloaded drum can be. One absorbent item may become much heavier than everything around it. Whirlpool’s front-load guidance identifies both single-item loads and tightly packed loads as potential problems.

Do not automatically add towels to every troublesome load. Check the washer manual and item labels first. Waterproof clothing, mats and bulky bedding can have special restrictions; a Bedding cycle is not universal permission to wash every large item. Excess suds can interfere with spinning

More detergent does not necessarily produce cleaner laundry. Too much detergent, or the wrong type, can create suds that interfere with draining or spinning. Water remaining in the drum points you toward drainage

Look only at accessible, visible sections of the external drain hose for an obvious pinch or bend. Do not pull the washer out, disconnect hoses or remove a stacked dryer. Drain-hose height and installation requirements vary by model.

If the nearby laundry sink or standpipe backs up, report that separately. The household drain may need plumbing attention, while a restriction within the washer needs appliance diagnosis.

Clean a drain filter only when your manual provides a consumer procedure

Not every washer has a user-accessible drain-pump filter. Do not assume that a front-loader has the same access arrangement as another brand, or that a top-loader has a filter behind a lower cover.

For applicable front-load models, Samsung Canada’s filter instructions describe draining residual water through an emergency hose before removing the filter. The instructions specifically defer to the model manual when the arrangement differs.

Switch off and disconnect power safely before maintenance, as directed by the manual. Residual water can be hot enough to scald, and releasing a filter with water trapped behind it can flood the floor. Bosch’s guidance warns about hot residual water.

If access requires screws, cabinet removal, moving the appliance or working near wet electrical equipment, leave it to a professional.

Front-load doors and top-load lids need different checks

A front-loader uses a door-lock arrangement. Top-loaders may use a lid switch, a lid lock or a combination, depending on their design. Do not assume the mechanisms are interchangeable.

Once the machine has stopped and unlocked normally, check for clothing caught in the opening and close the door or lid normally. A click alone does not prove that the washer has received the required closed or locked signal. Whirlpool identifies an unsecured or faulty latch as a possible interruption.

Never press a switch manually to make the washer spin with its lid open, bypass a lock or force a stuck door.

An error message is a clue, not a parts order

Record the exact characters, including capitals, numbers and flashing lights, alongside the model number.

When the washer drains but still will not spin

If appropriate settings and a suitable load do not restore spinning, professional checks may involve the locking system, motor, speed sensing, water-level sensing or electronic controls. These systems work together, so the symptom alone does not identify the failed part.

A drive belt is relevant only to a belt-driven washer. It transfers motion from the motor into the drive system, as illustrated by GE’s washer belt description. Direct-drive designs can eliminate that belt; LG describes this arrangement for its Inverter Direct Drive system.

A hum, squeal or click is useful information, but it cannot confirm a belt, pump or motor failure. A technician needs to establish what the machine is attempting and which part of that process fails.

What to record before calling for repair

Prepare a short description containing:

• Machine details: brand, model number and whether it is front-load, top-load, stacked or a washer-dryer combination.

• Fault evidence: exact error text, unusual sounds and the result of any safe check.

A useful description is: “It drains during Drain & Spin, but never speeds up, and the display shows this message.” You do not need to name a suspected part.
